Yuka is a mobile app that scans the barcode on food and cosmetics products and assesses their impact on health with a simple colour code, ranging from green to red. A detailed explanation of the assessment method is also provided. When an unhealthy product is scanned, Yuka recommends healthier alternatives.

For food products, the analysis of the impact on health is based on three criteria :

  • The NutriScore (developed by Santé Publique France, the French national public health agency) which takes into account the amount of energy, saturated fat, protein, sugar, salt, fruit and vegetables, and fibre – accounting for 60% of the mark
  • The presence of harmful or suspect additives – accounting for 30% of the mark
  • The organic origin of the product – accounting for 10% of the mark.

Yuka also assesses cosmetics and reports ingredients that may be irritating, allergenic or act as endocrine disruptors and carcinogenic agents.

The app is available in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, United States, Canada and Australia.
